It’s not just important to be a talented renderer, developing a great set of resources is essential, and allows you to spend your time on design rather than modeling a lamp. Time spent searching the internet for the perfect sky could be better spent developing a stronger proposal in order to win a new commission or simply meet a deadline. This posting contains many high resolution (3,000 pixels wide) images of skies that are open source and free to use. Over the years I have developed a plethora of graphic resources that I keep in my satchel (LaCie Little Disk 500 GB Portable Hard Drive, designed by Sam Hecht), and I will continue to organize these resources and post them on this site absolutely free!
Any experienced renderer knows that selecting the perfect sky for a rendering is very important because it is the sky that sets the mood for the architecture in your renderings. I used to scour the internet for images of skies that were nice, high resolution images, but after awhile I realized that I was fully capable of creating my own sky images for use in renderings. In the future I will create a series of video tutorials that will show you step by step the process that goes into creating a sky and different techniques that are easy to incorporate into your renderings, but make a huge difference.
All of the images available for use on this post have been taken with my Nikon D50 digital SLR camera, which unfortunately is no longer available and is a few years old now, I just wanted to give the Nikon brand a little plug here because they really make great cameras. Most of the images posted in this post have been photographed by myself and digitally altered for use in renderings. The others are images which I have found on the internet and have altered for use as entourage. This post will continually be updated to contain all of the sky images that I have used over the years. The images posted on this site are open source and serve as a free resource for anyone that would like to use these images in their own renderings. If this resource proves helpful, please make a donation to our chosen charity. It requires time to develop these images, but more importantly it requires hardware, software and other resources to produce great digital content free for you to use. Again if you find these resources useful please make a donation to our site so that we can continue to bring you great content.
